Using Websites in Assignments

Always check to make sure that your website has valid information before including it in an academic paper. Here is a checklist of information.

Evaluation of Websites
Authority Is the source of information reputable and reliable? What group or individual authored the site?
Timeliness Is the information current? When was the site last updated? Are the links working?
Accuracy Does the information seem credible? Can the information be verified? Are there references and footnotes?
Structure Is the site organized? Has someone put careful thought, time, and effort into the site?
Content and Bias Is the information well-balanced and of good quality? What is the purpose of the site? Why and for whom was it written?

American FactFinder provides access to data about the United States, Puerto Rico and the Island Areas. The data in American FactFinder come from several censuses and surveys.
NAICS (opens in new window)
NAICS is the standard used by federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

Labor Productivity and Costs - Department of Labor (opens in new window)
Each month, the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 145,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 557,000 individual worksites. The program provides detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 400 metropolitan areas and divisions.

The Current Industrial Report (CIR) program has been providing monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity for many years. The primary objective of the CIR program is to produce timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products.
