Visual and Media Literacy Guide: Image and Media Citations
Citation is required for all copyrighted works and recommended for works in the public domain. Copyrighted work can be used in limited ways for academic purposes, but you must follow “fair use” guidelines (e.g., it is closely related to the curriculum and project purpose, a very small sample of the work is included, you only share it with your instructor or with registered students in a live, unrecorded presentation.) For citation, remember to include visual media in your References list using the appropriate style guidelines required by your instructor.
*Ask your instructor if you are allowed to use AI images or video generated by yourself or someone else. If you are allowed to do so, you must cite it following the appropriate style guidelines required by your instructor (which typically includes the AI tool and the prompt used to generate it).
